Design Elements

(1)  Line
Can be straight, curved or irregular and can be used to create the other elements, such as shape and form.  It can be used to direct the eye to a particular part of a  piece.
(2)  Shape
Made up of several lines which join to create the shape.  Shapes can be free flowing or geometric and can be used with other elements to create form. A shape may be enhanced by using texture and/or colour.
(3)  Form
Created by joining two or more shapes together.
(4)  Texture
This relates to the feel of the surface and in some cases is described as tactile.  Textures can be random or repeated, in which case they appear as patterns.
(5)  Colour
One of the strongest elements of design, it can either make or break the piece of work. Colour may be used to specify areas, distinguish the form, or to highlight aspects of hierarchy.

Primary colour: The three colours that are equi distant on the colour wheel and used to make up all other colours; red, yellow and blue.

Secondary colour: A mixture of two primary colours

Tertiary colour: Colours formed from a primary and a secondary colour.
